Never gonna give you up…

Shouldn’t life be more like a musical?

I’m home sick; I was away from work Tuesday, Thursday and today all because I caught a particularly nasty influenza despite getting my flu shot in December. Unfortunately, I don’t get ’sick leave’ and I haven’t yet accrued sufficient ‘personal time off’ so I’m now subtracting these days off from my floating holiday stash - e.g., what people usually use for Christmastime. Ah well, the holiday will still work out, I get enough vacation to take a good time off for Christmas even without the holiday time…

I’m spending lots of time asleep… well, in between things waking me up such as garbage trucks, Zach attacking my door, heat, cold, Mormons (who are presently knocking loudly), boxes succumbing to Zach’s might and falling over, medicine, etc. I’m usually unable to spend much time unconscious so this is rather novel. When not asleep I’m tending to read (though last night I watched Top Gun, too). Among the things I’ve been reading have been some folks’ blogs - such as Robbie’s. He made a short post last month about seeing the musical Mamma Mia! wherein he asks:

Why can’t real life be more like a musical?

Could you imagine if we all settled our disputes by dancing? I would probably spend a good deal of time in the loser’s circle, but that’s OK. It would be worth it to look forward to seeing the couple who are horrible yet simultaneously perfect for each other settle their disputes every day with a duet over lunch…

Maybe it’s the prescription-strength cough/sore throat/sinus syrup talking but I find that idea to be humorous and appealing. I can imagine such a world, and I can even imagine writing a bad short story about such a society where dancing was the primary dispute resolution technique (no need for music though that adds fun, of course). Surely someone has already described such an idea, but I’m not up to finding out right now. In fact, now that the Mormons are gone again I think returning to sleep sounds like a good choice for a few more hours.

I remember reading something similar. It was talking about using disagreement as art. I hope you feel better soon!

I liked the Mamma Mia post, too. Whimsical. :)
I’m tempted to point out that you (and he) have nailed the premise of the Buffy musical that Stephen tried so hard to make us sit down and watch four or five years ago, but in the episode, the world-as-a-musical thing ends rather badly, so I think I’d rather disregard that. ;)

Oh, the Buffy musical doesn’t end THAT badly, and it is by far my favorite episode. The music is actually pretty good; some of the actors even have a CD or two out now.

No, I do like the episode — but the idea of having life-as-a-musical end with a rendtion of “Great Balls of Fire,” starring you as the ball of fire sounds less that pleasant to me. ;)

Heh, I adore musicals, even if I could never be in one. ^__^

May you overcome your influenza, and may the mormons forget your address.

    Also, kitty! Go Zach! =D

*laughs* Do they sell big signs that say “No Solicitors” in big capital letters with exclamation points? If so, I’ll buy you one. :)
Zach sounds psychotic. This is a marked improvement over my current situation, where I have a roommate who seems to be turning psychotic and his cat who is merely an attention whore. ;) I envy you, sir.

Not commenting on conflict resolution… I’m simply incorrigible when it comes to that. *chuckles*

I hope you feel better soon! Good to hear you’re catching up on sack time; that’s always a great help in healing up, although it could just be the effects of the stuff they’ve got you on for the infection. Maybe you’ll actually start sleeping normal hours now that you’re out of school… Wouldn’t that be funny?

    Anyhow, feel better!
